It shows land cover and ocean bathymetry in brilliant color and in unparalleled detail as it appears in the month of August (Winter in the southern hemisphere).
This satellite image map is the most accurate and up to date such map available today. The land imagery is based on data collected by NASA's MODIS satellite instrumentation in August 2004. Ocean bathymetry is derived from GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans), 2003.
Literally thousands of varied physical features can be seen on this view of the continent. Consider the contrast between the golden colored Sahara desert, the green equatorial rainforests and the dark southern deserts. The variety of features such as the snow tipped Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the Okavango delta and the Makgadikgadi Pan (dried lake) in the Kalahari desert in Botswana is typical.
